Fridge Fare and a GIVEAWAY

You know that annoying credit card commercial that always ends "What's in your wallet?" -- can I just say:  I don't care!  But I am curious to know what other people have in their fridge.

I think it's quite natural to think what you have in your fridge is just standard...until you go over to someone's house and realize that what they have sitting on their shelves is quite different than what's sitting on your shelves at home.  I think the same is true for a pantry, but since this is a "Fridge Fare" post, I'm sticking with the fridge theme.

Anyway, back to what's in my fridge.  I think there are a lot of good lists all over the internet as to what should be basic/standard fare, and that will, of course, change depending on how you eat.  Vegans won't have regular milk, cheese or eggs in their fridge.  Vegetarians won't have turkey bacon or a raw chicken breast.  And some won't have flaxmeal sitting in an old mason jar in their fridge like I do.  So just for fun, I thought I'd let you all take a peek into my fridge.

Let me first say, this is my fridge mid-meal-plan.  So it's about 2/3rd of the way empty from what it was a week ago right after I went shopping, and I haven't yet gone out to restock it with the fresh fruit/veggies I'll need for this upcoming week.  But I think this is good because you'll see what some of my basics are.

  • Eggs
  • Almond milk (trader joes!)
  • Salad
  • Squash and Zucchini from the farmer's market
  • Scallions
  • Leftovers - lentil salad, quinoa salad, and gazpacho
  • Oatmeal in the big bowl for Scot
  • Full Protein sprouted whole wheat bread (trader joes!)
  • Whole wheat sandwich thins (for mini-pizza for the boys)
  • Batteries (don't you know you're supposed to keep them in the fridge?)
  • Shredded cheese and cheese sticks for the boys and mini-pizzas
  • Grapes
  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • Bottles of water
  • Fake butter
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Roasted red peppers
  • Lemon and lime juice
  • Condiments: PB, Mustards, Ketchup, BBQ sauce
  • Minced and crushed garlic
  • Salad dressings (both homemade and store bought)
  • Sweet relish
  • Spaghetti sauce (1/2 full)
  • Vegetable broth base
  • Jams/Fruit Spreads
  • Green curry paste
  • Flax seed meal
  • Wheat germ
Again, this is mid-week, so other veggies that would have or will be pictured (bell peppers, eggplant, mushrooms, cucumbers, etc) are not here.

Anyway - that's my fridge.  Now to the GIVEAWAY!!

I love handmade soaps.  I love walking into the stores that sell handmade, triple-milled soaps.  I love picking up each and every delicious smelling soap and inhaling deeply.  One of my all-time favorite such shops is in Manitou Springs, CO.  It's called Salus, and I would have never discovered it except I got a gift certificate to use there for a birthday a few years ago.  So I drove the 20 minutes out there from my parent's house and fell completely in love.  It's a family run shop and all their soaps are organic artisan soaps made right there on site and ever since I found them, my kitchen sink always has a bar of theirs by it.  I have about 5 or 6 favorite scents and every time I go home, I pick up a few more so I'm sure to never ever run out.

So your giveaway today is really nothing too special.  It's just a bar of soap, really.  But let me tell ya, this bar of soap will last you a while, and it smells soooo good, and you'll just have to remember that it came all the way from Colorado when you use it.

I have for you two scents to choose from:
Lemongrass Poppy and Alpine Anise.

Here are the rules:
  • To enter: leave a comment here on the blog telling me 1) which scent you would like if you win and 2) what is the one thing your fridge must always always have in it
  • You may up your chances of winning if you post about the blog/giveaway on facebook and leave a second comment telling me about it
  • You can up your chances even more if you blog about the giveaway and leave a second or third comment, again, telling me you did so.

Giveaway will run through Thursday evening(8/9/12), 9pm EST and I will announce the giveaway winner (which will be randomly selected) Friday morning.
I will ship anywhere in the US and will contact you for mailing info

If you're new here and just popping in, welcome!  I hope that if you like what you see you'll consider following me or subscribing via email to receive notifications when I post new recipes.

  1. Either, but I'd prefer Lemongrass Poppy.
Should I be keeping my flax seed meal and wheat germ in the fridge?! I just put mine in the cupboard.
I must have some kind of milk in the fridge. I mostly use organic soymilk, but I also buy almond milk, coconut milk (though I like that less in my cereal), and now I buy organic whole milk for Elijah. I love cereal, and have it either for breakfast, or for a late night snack before bed (it's that or ice cream at night).

  3. Hi Sarah,
We went to our friends' house for lunch yesterday and they had just gone vegan recently. They told us to watch Fork over Knife, so last night we did. We see a lot of truth and are interested in getting started. I thought of your blog, so I'm excited to look through it and learn more. Any tips for a beginner?
If I win, I'll take the Alpine soap. :)

  5. Hi Sarah,
Right now we have lots of leftover quinoa salad, but we always have spinach. Either soap would be fine!

  6. I was just in CO Springs for the first time last week and drove through Manitou. It looked like a really fun place to shop but not enough time to stop this time. Next time I'll look for the soap shop. Lemongrass poppy if I win please. And I don't believe my fridge is ever without salsa!

  8. Hey Sarah--I would love to win the Alpine Anise soap!

Recently we've been keeping avocados and tomatoes in our fridge at ALL times. Oh, and our Costco-sized tub of minced garlic, of course!

Hope you guys are doing well--I love to look for new healthy recipes on your blog. We've been trying to eat a bit less meat recently (ironic, since I work for Smithfield...) so I love all the vegetarian recipes you provide.

  10. Okay, girl...I am entering with a lame answer of: Milk. This is NOT that I always have it. I have definitely been known to say that it's dry cereal for the next 24. But. That and fruit of some type. In my pantry...now that one I'd have to answer with my most desired...which would be cocoa powder (which necessitates sugar...and butter in the fridge!). So, there ya' have it. And...Lemongrass Poppy. :)

  12. Lemongrass Poppy sounds delish! We can't live without milk in our fridge, cows milk and almond milk. Our little one is severely allergic to dairy, so we use the almond for him. Thanks for the great recipes!

I keep a pretty well stocked fridge! Milk and eggs are a must, and for my husbands sake, a wide variety of condiments!
